Midwood is a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York City located in the southern part of the borough. Here you will find Brooklyn College, the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts, and the Kent Theater. The Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College is one of the premier cultural institutions in Brooklyn. The 2,400-seat Walt Whitman Theater is host to world-renowned artists and performances, and hosts more than 200 events each year. It was once home to the Metropolitan Opera Guild and has seen performances by Leonard Bernstein, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Bob Dylan, and Barbra Streisand, to name a few. The theater is now used by the Brooklyn Philharmonic and various Broadway shows.
History of Midwood
Midwood, Brooklyn takes its name from the Dutch term midwout, which means "middle woods," indicating how densely wooded the area was when the first inhabitants came. Even though there aren't many forest critters left, many of the area's streets are still shaded and tree-lined, making them excellent for walking.
Aside from the calm, Midwood, Brooklyn has been home to some of our country's most important political individuals, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the former Supreme Court Justice who grew up in Midwood. In Brooklyn, a statue and homage to her life and legacy will be unveiled soon. Another noteworthy individual, Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to Congress, also called Midwood home.
