History of Brooklyn Heights
The neighborhood has a long history, dating back to the Dutch colonial era when it was first settled by farmers in the 1600s. In the 1800s, the area became a fashionable suburb of New York City and was home to many wealthy families. The neighborhood was home to many famous writers and artists including Truman Capote, Norman Mailer, and W.H. Auden. The area was also home to the first African American church in Brooklyn, the Abyssinian Baptist Church.
