About Chinatown Optical 40 Years

The story of Chinatown Optical is really a story of the American dream and about an immigrant from China, my dad, he came here almost more than 40 years ago, and he just wanted to realize the American dream. Being an entrepreneur, starting his own business, and really succeeding in that.

The first store was in corner of Mott Street and Pell Street back in 1979. He took a big risk, both professionally and personally to open a store here in Chinatown. People thought it was dirty, it was dangerous, so he really put himself out there.

He really instilled the value of hard work. His tenacity, his grit, his vision for the business and his ability to really resonate with a lot of customers, with a lot of employees, and how he was patient with all of them to get them to both train new leaders into the business, and also to build a relationship with customers that continued to come year after year to the store and bring their family, their grandparents, their kids, their grandkids to our optical. So he really built up that foundation, that brand of Mott Optical and Chinatown Optical that really becomes an institution in the New York City area. Growing up with him, he was very patient with my sister and I and I could see that when he teaches his employees at the workplace where he's very patient in teaching how to sell glasses, how to adjust glasses, how to edge glasses. So those values of patience and understanding is what he instilled in us and how we want to continue the business going forward. My sister and I, we were very close growing up. We also fought a lot as well, as all siblings have and we still do right now, as well, at work. We have our disagreements and we have our arguments but we hash it out behind closed doors and then we have a united front and really come together when it really matters.

Both stores here in Chinatown on Mott Street always welcome all the lions to come and parade in front of the stores and we always do a long show for both of the stores because they're so welcoming to all the groups throughout the Chinatown community. So it is really a home base for a lot of people in Chinatown, for myself, for my father, and for my entire family that's been coming here for many years.

The foundations that have sustained Chinatown Optical over these last 40 years is really knowing that it's a family run business and knowing that they're loyal to their customers and their customers are loyal to them. They'll keep coming back because they know the folks are here are honest, they have high integrity, and they're gonna take care of you. Knowing that there's that consistency, knowing it's the same family, there's just no replacing things like that.

It's incredibly rare for a business to have a lifespan in the span of decades and I think that Ken's parents are incredibly passionate, driven, and kindhearted people. And in order to execute a business at that kind of length, you need to have a very good long-term vision.

We saw a lot of patients over the past 20 years and our patient are very happy to come back to see us.
The paients and doctor's relationship is really important. Basically my patient as the family members to me, they are really happy to talk to me about everything. That really helped us to grow as a business and a family community provider.
